🏸 Coaching & Programs
1. Who are the badminton coaching programs for?
We welcome players of all ages and levels — from complete beginners to advanced competitors. Our Junior Fundamentals sessions (ages 7–16) teach the basics such as grip, footwork, movement, and technique through fun and structured drills. Our Adult Group Sessions cater to first-timers, social players, and experienced competitors looking to refine their game.
If you’re already playing club badminton and want to improve your technique, consistency, or match strategy, our programs will help you get there. Whether you want to perform better in competition or simply enjoy the game more, we tailor the training to suit your goals.
2. What kind of badminton coaching sessions do you run?
- Junior Group Sessions (7–16 yrs) – 2-hour group training focusing on technical foundations, movement, and match play.
- Junior Performance Group Sessions (8–12 yrs & 13–17 yrs) – Designed for players who’ve developed strong fundamentals and are ready to train at a higher level. Players must complete a skills and fitness assessment to join. Sessions focus on improving technique, tactical awareness, footwork, shot accuracy, and match strategy.
- Adult Group Sessions (18+) – 2-hour structured sessions with a mix of drills, games, fitness, and match play for players of all levels.
- Private & Small-Group Coaching – 1-hour or longer sessions for individuals or small groups who want personalised attention and faster improvement.
- Online Coaching & Membership – Access to training videos, footwork drills, game analysis, and remote coaching feedback from anywhere.
3. What does “10-week cycle” mean for Junior Fundamentals?
Our Junior Group Sessions are carefully structured to build a strong foundation in all key areas — technique, movement, coordination, and game understanding — in a fun and supportive environment.
We follow a 10-week progressive training plan designed to help players develop step by step. Each week focuses on a specific stroke or tactical skill, ensuring gradual improvement.
Our typical 10-week rotation includes:
1️⃣–2️⃣ Overhead Strokes – Two weeks focused on developing strength, timing, and control for this essential yet challenging shot.
3️⃣ Forehand & Backhand Lifts – Learning to lift with accuracy, height, and confidence under pressure.
4️⃣ Net Play (Forehand & Backhand) – Improving touch, control, and anticipation in the front court.
5️⃣–6️⃣ Overhead Strokes (Revisited) – Reinforcing technique and building muscle memory through repetition.
7️⃣ Forehand Serve – Developing consistent and accurate long and short serves.
8️⃣ Backhand Serve – Perfecting the short serve used in both singles and doubles.
9️⃣ Net Kills & Defence – Building reaction speed, positioning, and the ability to read attacking shots.
🔟 Skills Assessment – Players put everything into action as we test fitness, speed, agility, and technique. Sessions are recorded, and players are assessed for entry into Performance Groups.
All sessions include dynamic warm-ups, footwork drills, multi-shuttle feeding, and game-based learning — designed to make training both fun and effective. Players who show consistency and dedication are often invited to progress to our Performance Squad.
4. What can I expect in an adult group badminton session?
Our Adult Group Sessions cater to players of all levels — from beginners mastering fundamentals to advanced players improving precision and game awareness. Every session is structured, engaging, and focused on steady improvement in a friendly and inclusive environment.
We operate on a monthly training focus — each month targets a different skill theme so you can master each area through repetition and feedback.
Example Monthly Themes:
- Attacking Play: Smashes, net kills, and follow-up positioning.
- Defensive Play: Blocks, drives, and lifts.
- Tactical Control: Shot placement, transitions, and doubles movement.
Each week builds upon the previous one, helping you consolidate skills and make visible progress. Training themes are announced in our WhatsApp group so players can follow their development through the season.
Each session includes a warm-up, footwork routine, technical drills, multi-shuttle feeding, and match-based strategy training, blending fitness and skill-building for real on-court results.
5. Do you offer a Performance Pathway for junior badminton players?
Yes — The Badminton Hub provides dedicated Performance Pathway programs for both juniors and adults looking to compete at higher levels.
Junior Performance Pathway (Ages 8–12 & 13–17)
Our junior pathway supports players who are committed to improving their skills and competing in local, state, and national-level tournaments. We run separate groups for younger (8–12 yrs) and older (13–17 yrs) players to match ability and maturity levels.
Sessions include advanced drills, fitness, tactical development, and match-play scenarios. We maintain small coach-to-player ratios for personalised feedback and high-intensity, game-based learning.
Entry into this program requires:
- Clearing full court consistently
- Forehand serving to full court
- Controlled full-court lifts
- Consistent rally ability
- Passing a short speed and coordination test
Performance players must also attend a minimum of two sessions per week and compete in Badminton Victoria tournaments.
Adult Performance Pathway (Intermediate & Competitive Players)
These sessions are ideal for adults who regularly compete in leagues, tournaments, or veteran events. Focus areas include precision shot-making, tactical awareness, and conditioning for match endurance.
Both pathways provide structure, challenge, and long-term development for players seeking to perform at their best.
6. Can siblings share a Training Pack in the Performance Squad?
No.
Each Performance Squad player must hold their own Training Pack or Weekly Pass.
The Training Pack is designed to support the minimum recommended training load of two sessions per week per player and is non-transferable. This ensures fair access to courts, consistent coaching ratios, and proper development for every athlete.
For families with multiple players training regularly, we offer a Sibling Unlimited Add-on, which provides better value for highly committed athletes training 3–4 times per week.
7. How do I know which class is right for me (or my child)?
We guide every player based on age, ability, and goals. Most juniors start in our Fundamentals program before progressing to the Performance Squad once they can meet the skill criteria listed above. Adult players can join Fundamentals or Intermediate sessions depending on experience and competition goals. If unsure, our Head Coach can assess your ability and recommend the best program.
8. What is the player-to-coach ratio?
We maintain small group sizes to ensure focused learning:
- Junior Fundamentals: 6 – 8 players per court with a dedicated coach. Players are grouped by age and skill level to maximise learning while keeping sessions fun and engaging. This structure ensures balanced attention and the strong community feel The Badminton Hub is known for.
- Junior Performance: 4 – 6 players per court with a dedicated coach. Athletes benefit from close guidance, a positive team environment, and a clear pathway toward higher performance levels.
- Junior High Performance: 2 – 3 players per court with a dedicated coach, ensuring elite-level attention and rapid development. Sessions focus on advanced technique, speed, strength, and match strategy. Athletes train in a competitive yet supportive environment that prepares them for high-level tournaments and representative pathways.
- Adult Fundamentals: 4 – 6 players per court, or 8 across 2 courts.
- Adult Intermediate: 3 – 4 players per court, or 8 across 2 courts.
9. What qualifications do your badminton coaches have?
All coaches at The Badminton Hub are Badminton World Federation (BWF) certified and hold valid Working with Children Checks.
Our senior coaches have a minimum BWF Level 1 accreditation and bring over 20 years of combined coaching experience across junior, adult, and high-performance programs.
Many have competed at advanced levels and continue to refine their skills through ongoing education. Our team prides itself on delivering structured, professional, and inspiring coaching.
10. What level of commitment is required?
While junior and adult fundamentals players are welcome to attend casually, consistent training produces the best results. We recommend at least one session per week for steady improvement, and two or more sessions for faster progress and stronger skill development.
Performance Squad players are required to train a minimum of two sessions per week, with many choosing to attend 3–4 sessions weekly to build advanced technique, fitness, and tactical consistency. Entry into the Performance Squad requires strong commitment and discipline, while progression into the High Performance program demands an even greater level of dedication and focus.
11. Do you offer 1-hour group badminton coaching sessions?
No — all group sessions run for 2 hours. One-hour sessions don’t allow enough time to cover full technical, tactical, and fitness components. Our 2-hour format includes agility and skill based warm-ups, footwork, multi-shuttle feeding, gameplay, and technical drills that build real progress in coordination, agility, speed, endurance, and game understanding.
